Client Profile:

BAE Systems

600 District Ave., Burlington MA

BAE Systems, at 600 District Ave, Burlington MA, is a British multinational defense, security, and aerospace company.

This very large office space occupies two locations, one 5 floor location at 600 District Ave in Burlington and the other at 800 District Ave. The lobby contains a pair of large, 750 square foot planters and these brick walkways with oversized urns built on the corners. We change these with new flowering plants about every 6 to 8 weeks, and seasonally theme them, so that the spring rotation includes plants with moss accents, the fall contains red, yellow and orange plants with seedpods, etc. They are really spectacular!

Throughout the rest of the building are about 50-70 floor plants in different configurations, in common areas as well as individual offices.

Because it’s such a large facility with varying degrees of light levels, we have to use a number of different species and types of plants to get the right look. Here’s where we truly earn the job description of Interior Landscapers, because each plant needs to be the correct one for the location it’s set in within the building itself.

Cheryl Hafferty is the Administration and Facility Director at BAE: “The job you do is perfect, thank you so much for working with us. I greatly appreciate it.”

Stonebridge at Burlington

50 Greenleaf Way, Burlington MA

Stonebridge at Burlington, is an innovative senior living community in Burlington.

We installed an interesting project at this property–this is actually an artificial plant wall–lifelike plastics substitute for real plants because the location it’s in within the facility prohibits the use of live plants.

Cactus Office Plants

Cactus Office Plants: Opuntia or Prickly Pear Cactus

Recently the interior plant craze has been succulents in small bowl arrangements. Accordingly, cacti are also making a comeback.

Once popular in offices in the late nineties, there’s been a big resurgence in placing cacti as office plants, and we’ve been installing more and more of them.

One of my favorites is Opuntia, or Prickly Pear Cactus.

In the picture shown at the top left, we have the common opuntia that we install in offices–these are grown in Florida and are “spineless”–for ornamental purposes they’re grown without their trademark long spines for both safety and visual appeal. The picture on the bottom left shows a true prickly pear cactus in all it’s spiky glory–big, half inch to inch long thorns that will do a number on you should you make the mistake of falling into one–trust me–I know from hiking in Arizona and accidently falling one one or two.

In general, Cacti make pretty easy office plants to care for–it goes without saying they can tolerate long periods without watering, and are very resistent to most pests that attack other indoor plants with the exception of scale from time to time. What they need, which most people don’t understand, is lots and lots of natural sunlight. The need to be in a window, preferably a south/southwest facing window, so they can get all the sunlight they’ll need to survive indoors. They simply won’t survive under flouescent lights–these types of lights don’t emit enough lumens to support cacti.

First Office Planter Installation

Memory Lane: Our First Interior Planter Installation

In looking through some very old photos we had of when the company was just starting out, I came across this picture from 2002.

It’s of the very first planter installation we ever did–meaning a built in planter in an office building in Burlington, MA. I guess I feel kind of nostalgic when I look at this photo; it wasn’t a big job at all, but it felt like it at the time!

It was the same feeling you get anytime you’re doing something for the first time–are all the plants perfectly aligned? Are they seated too tall or too short in the planter? Is the rock groundcover perfectly even–did we use enough? Though I had lots of experience doing interior plants at the now defunct City Gardens in Newton back in the 80s, this was the first major renovation/installation I did on my own

It’s funny too–I keep saying “We”–it was really just me, I was all alone back then–I used to do the installations and then come back the next week to water the plants myself, but you have to start somewhere!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you charge for quotes?

A: We do not charge for quotes. We have a wonderful visual quoting process where we can do a short, complimentary walkthrough of your office and take a series of photos, and then photoshop pictures of the plants right in, so you can clearly see the difference you’ll experience with adding some live plants, and get a feel for the finished result.

Q: How does the program work?

A: We provide you with a quote for the plants and containers, which you’ll own. We provide you a separate price for regular maintenance visits that include watering, fertilizer, dusting, pruning, and most importantly, regular, free replacements when they’re needed

Q: What does it cost?

A: Prices range from $75 a month on up, depending on how many and how large the plants are.

Q: Does it include taking care of a few company plants we already have?

A: In most cases, we can care for a few of the plants you have on site when we make our scheduled maintenance visits as a complimentary service included in the maintenance of the other plants.

Q: Does it require a long term commitment?

A: We offer two types of payment: A month to month plan where you can cancel with 30 days notice, and a yearly prepaid maintenance plan that includes a discount off the monthly cost.

Q: How do I get started?

A: Easy! Just get in contact with us to arrange a short site visit, and we’ll take it from there!
